Wilmington March for Life Speakers

We listen to the speakers who presented at the annual March for Life Wilmington 2024 that was held on Saturday, February 17, at Long Leaf Park. The speakers each presented a powerful and prayerful pro-life message encouraging us all to be courageous in our defense of the right to life for the unborn child. The speakers included NC Lt. Governor, Mark Robinson; Pastor of Wilmington's Liberty Bible Church, Pastor Tony McGhee; President of NC Right to Life, Dr. Bill Pincus; and Cayla Collins, Regional NC Field Director for Susan B. Carolina Catholic learns about The Life of Sr. Mary Wilhelmina

Tara and I have a wonderful conversation with Sister Mary Josefa whose community, the Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles, wrote a biography of the community's founder, Sister Wilhelmina, a sister for 75 years, who died in 2019 but whose body seems miraculously intact four years after her death. Sister Wilhelmina's story of fighting racism and working to establish her traditional order dedicated to God and His priests is awe inspiring.

Eucharistic Adoration with Our Blessed Mother and Blessed Miriam Teresa Demjanovich, SC

We meet two Catholic women who are authors from EWTN Publishing and Ignatius Press respectively, Donna-Marie Cooper O'Boyle and GinaMarie Tennant. Donna-Marie was a friend of St. Mother Teresa and has hosted shows on EWTN, and GinaMarie is an author, musician, and artist. March for Life

We prepare for the annual March for Life in DC with three guests. Our first two guests, Ashley McGuire and Leigh Fitzpatrick, are from The Catholic Association, and they wrote a recent opinion piece on how even wealth and fame do not save women from begin forced to have abortions; just recently, we learned from Brittany Spears' memoir that she was pressured to have her abortion. In addition, we will hear from the president of Solidarity Solidarity Health Share, Chris Faddis, as we celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, a law which is designed to protect the conscience of all religious believers.

Our guest, Vince Sanzone, talks about his work as a defense attorney for New Jersry's Legal Center for Defense of Life where he has worked pro-bono for the past 33 years representing pro-lifers who have been arrested praying outside of abortion clinics. Vince is a Knight of the Order of Malta and the recipient of the Legal Center's Pro-life Achievement Award for his legal work. North Carolina's Care for Women, Children, & Families Act (SB20)

Carolina Catholic talks about North Carolina's Senate Bill 20 or the Care for Women, Children, and Families Act that will become law on July 1, 2023, which restricts the majority of abortions after 12 weeks. North Carolina had a law that allowed abortions up to 20 weeks, but after the SCOTUS' decision in Dobbs v. Jackson, the issue of abortion regulation was returned to the states, and our legislature passed this law to limit abortions to 12 weeks while providing millions to families to assist women with childcare, daycare, paid family leave, etc. Tara Lewis and I will discuss both the Dobbs' decision and SB20 with the state president of North Carolina Right to Life, Dr. Bill Pincus.

Tara Lewis and I chat with HayleyShovlin, Quinn, and Brooks Robinson, siblings of Rosemary Thérèse, "Rosie," who at age 17 was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. Despite this, she played sports and went to school offering it all up for the good of others. After her death at age 19 in 2021, her parents read her prayer journal. In it, she wrote only nine days after her cancer diagnosis, “I want to save souls including my own.” Her story is recalled in the book written by Hayley Shovlin called, The Little Flower of Nashville.

Tara Lewis and I chat with Dr. John Bruchalski, an OB/GYN, based in Virginia, whose book, "Two Patients, My Conversion from Abortion to Life-Affirming Medicine," tells his story of how one physician, who did abortions, came to question what he was doing and pioneered a Catholic approach to reproductive medicine that respects female fertility, honors the dignity of unborn children, and offers care to patients regardless of their ability to pay. He calls this "merciful medicine" thanks to how Jesus and Mary personally interceded in his life   and led him to care for both mom and child as his "two patients."

The 2023 March for Life in DC

For our first show in February, Tara Lewis and I report from the 50th annual March for Life in DC which was also the first march since the Supreme Court of the United States overturned Roe v. Wade, the case which legalized the right to abortion in all 50 states back in 1973. In this show, we first speak with the Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge, Chairman of the USCCB's Committee on Pro-Life Activities, on what we can do as Catholics now that the fight for the right to life of the unborn has been returned to the states. We also chat with two post-abortive women about their work in educating people about why they both regret their abortions, and we chat with several organizations that work to educate and help women and girls in crisis pregnancies across the USA.

Bella Dodd and her journey from Communism to Catholicism

Tara Lewis and I chat with Mary A. Nicholas, MD, co-author with Dr. Paul Kengor, about their book, The Devil and Bella Dodd: One Woman's Struggle Against Communism and Her Redemption. Tara Lewis and I interview our guest, Father Charles Murr, author of Murder in the 33rd Degree,who worked in Rome for many years and studied for the priesthood there. He literally saw history in the making in several ways: He was there for the pontificates of three popes (Popes Paul VI, John Paul I, and John Paul II), and he was friends with Canadian Archbishop Gagnon who was asked by Pope Paul VI to investigate the Roman Curia, the governing body of the Catholic Church due to allegations that Freemasons were controlling the selection of bishops and changing the liturgy/liturgical liturgical norms of the Catholic Church. His newest book details his investigation of the Roman Curia and how these three popes reacted to his investigation.

Carolina Catholic and friends react to the Dobbs' decision which overturned Roe v. Wade

For our second August show, Judi Paparozzi and Tara Lewis talk to local pro-lifers, including the Knights of Columbus, about how we as Catholics should react to the Dobbs' decision, now that it has been released reversing Roe v. Wade, with the realization that many states around NC will be abortion free; this concerns many of us who fight for the rights of the unborn, as we may soon see an increase in the number of women coming from other states to have abortions here in Wilmington. We as Catholics believe we must work to help women in crisis pregnancies including helping them long after the baby is born, and it is now more important than ever to vote pro-life fighting for the rights of all children, born and unborn, and assisting moms in crisis pregnancies. Catholics must show the world that we love both the mom and the child.

My guest is the executive director of Priests for Life, Janet Morana, whose newest book is called, Everything You Need to Know About Abortion-For Teens. Janet has been working full-time in the pro-life movement for over three decades, and she is also the co-founder of the Silent No More Awareness Campaign. In her newest book, Janet lays out the history of abortion in the USA from the earliest rulings to Roe v. Wade, and she brings her meticulous research to life by sharing heart-wrenching stories of post-abortive women. This book is not only for teens; it is a well-researched book about the issue of abortion and will make us even stronger in our support of the unborn and their right to life. She also comments on what we can expect when the official opinion on the Dobbs' case is released in June 2022.

Two new books from Ignatius Press with guests, George Weigel and Bill Donohue

My guests include Catholic theologian and author, George Weigel, talking about the book, Jesuit at Large: Essays and Reviews by Paul V. Mankowski, S.J., and also Bill Donohue, President of the Catholic League on his book, The Truth about Clergy Sexual Abuse: Clarifying the Facts and the Causes. George Weigel was close friends with Jesuit Father Paul Mankowski who was a prodigious writer whose mission in life was to prod the Jesuits into once more being the special forces of faith. Bill Donohue, who has his PhD on Sociology, used his social science background to full investigate the clergy sex abuse scandal documenting all sides of the story that impacted our Church so deeply.

 My guest is an old friend to many in Wilmington, Charles Fraune. Charles is married with three children (and one on the way), and he is a Catholic author with several books to his credit. We will talk about his current book, Slaying Dragons: Prepare for Battle: Applying the Wisdom of Exorcists to your Spiritual Warfare, which is a workbook that accompanies his 2019 book, Slaying Dragons. This workbook teaches the reader how to apply the wisdom of exorcists to our own spiritual battles by learning how to live a holy life, the efficacy of grace and the sacraments, how to avoid the occult, and how to access the great treasury of prayers and devotions offered by our Catholic Church.

Our guest is Deacon Wally Calabrese who is assigned to Annunciation Parish in Havelock (St. Therese pastor Father Upah's former parish). Deacon Calabrese is a retired Gunnery Sergeant of the U.S. Marine Corps, and he holds a Master's degree in Pastoral Theology. We will chat about his two works, a book on the apostles (not 12 by his count, but 15 ordinary men and one extraordinary lady, Our Blessed Mother), The Apostles and Me, and their impact on our lives today, and his booklet, Confirmed and Ready, which answers the question,"What does it mean to be confirmed in the Catholic Church?"

Our guest is John Salza, a former Freemason. He is an apologist for the Catholic faith, a lawyer, and an author who has written several books including two books on Freemasonry: Masonry Unmasked: An Insider Reveals the Secrets of the Lodge and Why Catholics Cannot Be Masons. He authored Masonry Unmasked for general readership, and he wrote Why Catholics cannot be Masons specifically for Catholics showing why the Church has always condemned Freemasonry and continues to condemn Freemasonry today (despite mistaken claims to the contrary.) In this show, he explains Masonic doctrines, history, rituals, oaths and curses, showing that Masonry is totally incompatible with Christianity and the Catholic Faith.

Our host, Judi Paparozzi, who teaches and trains extensively on human trafficking, gives a virtual talk for Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Southport, in honor of Respect Life Month, on how our kids could be vulnerable to trafficking if allowed unsupervised and unfettered access to all online social media formats. In addition, she gives tips on what parents and grandparents can do to partner with teens to protect them online. Finally, she discusses why trafficking in all its forms is a respect life issue for Catholics.

Father Altman practiced law for many years before hearing the call to the consecrated life and becoming a priest in 2008, and he has been the pastor of St. James since 2010. In this show, we talk about his deep love for our Catholic faith, challenges he's facing about his own priesthood, how other priests are facing persecution, and how we can all support our holy priests during these turbulent times.

Our guest is Charlie Hearn, a young man who has faced incredible adversity from the moment he was born, but who persevered in his faith and his love of Christ through times in his life that would defeat many. Charlie was born with a rare genetic disorder called Ellis-Van Creveld Syndrome which causes a malformation of the heart, cirrhosis of the liver, and other challenging medical issues that he's endured for over three decades. But through faith and with the help of his heroic mom, Bessie, Charlie has fought the good fight and will soon celebrate his 35th birthday. Charlie also evangelizes to the brokenhearted here in Wilmington at a prayer meeting held every Friday night.

Our guest is Father Jeffrey Kirby, S.T.D., pastor of Our Lady of Grace Parish, Indian Land, South Carolina and a prolific Catholic author. His newest book called Way of the Cross for Loved Ones Who Have Left the Faith is a devotional aid to those of us who have loved ones who have left the Catholic faith. In this book, Father Kirby shows us how to pray for this intention by joining our sufferings with those of Jesus in the Stations of the Cross. While contemplating our Savior's sacrificial love, we can intercede for friends and family as they spiritually carry the cross with Jesus asking him to lead our loved ones back to God and His Church.

Judi interviewed Kevin Wells, a Catholic author, whose newest book from Ignatius Press is called, "Priest and Beggar: The Heroic Life of Venerable Aloysius Schwartz." Father Al heard the call of the Virgin of the Poor to serve the poor of the world, and in his work in South Korea, the Philippines, and Central America, Father Al built 17 Boystowns and Girlstowns that service, to this day, the poor; giving children a home, an education, and a deep and abiding love of the Catholic faith. 

Judi Paparozzi interviewed Patricia Sandoval, co-host of EWTN's Español channel's weekly television program, “Informe Pro Vida” or "Pro-life report," and one of Ignited by Truth's 2021 speakers. Patricia’s story is a testament to the saving love and mercy of Jesus Christ and His desire to bring this world's hidden dangers into the light for healing. Patricia shares her testimony in speaking engagements around the world especially in Latin America, where her pro-life, pro-chastity work is having a great impact. We will learn her story as it is recounted in her book, "Transfigured: Patricia Sandoval’s Escape from Drugs, Homelessness, and the Back Doors of Planned Parenthood."

Carolina Catholic talked with human trafficking expert, Bill Woolf, the Director of Human Trafficking Programs for the Department of Justice, about the impact COVID 19 has had on the prevalence of human trafficking and why Catholics should view human trafficking as a pro-life issue.

Bill Woolf is a former detective and human trafficking task force lead investigator with the Fairfax County VA Sheriff's Office who has prosecuted many cases on this crime and rescued many victims from human trafficking.

We chat with Father Brian Lynch, an associate pastor at Transfiguration Church in Oakdale, MN whose homily on the "anniversary" of Roe v. Wade on January 22, 2021 has become viral on the Internet. In this show, Father Lynch details his journey from being a scientist with 3M to the priesthood and what led him to give such an impassioned homily in defense of the faith and the unborn on the 48th "anniversary" of legalized abortion in America.

We chat with Rachel Smith, daughter of Anthony and Tracy Smith, St. Mark parishioners, granddaughter of Frank Bua, a parishioner at the Basilica Shrine of St. Mary. Rachel is a junior at Franciscan University of Steubenville, and with the blessing of its presidents, Father Dave Pivonka, Rachel shared her life at FUS, how it's referred to by students as the Catholic Disneyland, and how attending FUS has deepened her faith through Mass, Eucharistic Adoration, and a great love of the Church she has experienced at FUS.

We talk with Tom and Tara Lewis, who have helped bring the Traditional Latin Mass to the Basilica Shrine of St. Mary's over the past decade. Tom and Tara have a great love for the Mass in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite, and they will share what it's like to attend Mass celebrated in Latin, the differences between the Novus Ordo Mass (that we attend weekly) and the Latin Mass, and how having this Mass in Wilmington has been a blessing to so many who love or have come to love the Latin Mass.

The Traditional Latin Mass is held monthly on the fourth Sunday of the month (except in December when it is on the third Sunday) at 5 pm. Check the Wilmington Catholic Radio website for any Mass announcement as well as obtaining the Mass Propers.

We meet the author of Finding Viganò, Dr. Robert Moynihan, who is the founder and editor of the magazine, Inside the Vatican. Dr. Moynihan was sent by TAN Publishers on a mission to find Archbishop Viganò after he released his Testimony in August of 2018. In the December show, we learn about Archbishop Viganò, his Testimony, and how it impacted the investigation of former American Cardinal Theodore McCarrick.  In the January show, we learn more about Archbishop Viganò and his Testimony and why Archbishop Viganò decided to release this Testimony to the world.

We chat with Deacon John Walsh about the history, art, and architecture of the Basilica Shrine of St. Mary here in Wilmington. Through the efforts of many priests, this beautiful church was not only built in 1912, but these priests also helped build a school and a rectory, they bought the Tileston Center where so many wonderful ministries serve the people to this day, and they worked to make this magnificent church elevated to both a shrine and a minor basilica. In this show, we learn about the pastors who did so much to make our beautiful basilica shrine a place of pilgrimage and worship for all Catholics.

We meet one of the three priests hosting Let Freedom Ring, 40 Days to Freedom from the devil, a 40 day novena which began July 7th and ends August 15th when a new novena will commence. We will meet Father James Altman, who along with Fr. Bill Peckman and Fr. Rick Heilman, has led this novena by providing thoughtful reflections, prayers of reparation and exorcism, and litanies to the faithful in order to inspire us all to call out to God to bless and heal our land. The next novena, the 54 day Novena for Our Nation, begins August 15th and runs to October 7th. 

The second show also features Father Altman who is pastor of St. James the Less in La Crosse, Wisconsin, and one of the priests leading the faithful in the 54 day Novena for our Nation. In this show, Father talks about his Marian priesthood and Mary's leading him to the priesthood, and how as Catholics, we must live the truth of our faith to its fullest both in our families and as citizens in the public square.
